Had a fantastic day today with real life hypocrites in full flight… Ok I landed at Wellington airport (late as we had to fly in circles for 15 minutes due to bad weather). Shock to the system arriving from balmy Auckland, to like 13 degrees and wind / rain (and I am thinking no doubt this weather will be heading north towards AKL fast).
Get to the taxi line and holy moley, there are like (no exaggeration) probably 150+ travellers in a queue and we are all partly getting wet. Reminded me of a time I landed in Las Vegas and had to wait one hour for a cab (that time literally in 45 degree heat though!)… OK I have a session I am facilitating for a client really soon and I am slightly nervous about getting there on time to run this pending session. I move about two thirds of the way through the queue (was not that bad, might have taken say 15 minutes) and suddenly a few “Green cabs” start turning up (not the usual “white” ones) and for some reason looks like they cannot go all the way forward to the front of the queue, so they start trying to coax people to jump in. Anyhow someone jumps in (the guy behind me) and the guy in front of me says “since when did humans stop following the rules and decide that they did not need to wait in queues”? I know that I actually do not follow rules (ok am being truthful, I am quite a free spirit) but I nod with the guy (cannot really be bothered engaging in huge conversation, was trying to think on my session that was getting ever closer, if I was to get there on time!)…
Two minutes later… The guy who has espoused the poor state of humanity due to people not sticking in queues and following through the line process, sees a cab pull up to us – he looks around and decides to jump in (we are only 80% of the way through the queue)… I think “what the!” (given his earlier statement) and then… the person in front of him (a lady who looked to be a powerful lady, she had that aura about her) ran over to the cab he was getting in and opened the door and started “abusing” the man (ok not quite abusing, but in a very loud way telling the man who had earlier said humans should wait their turn in lines to me) “you cannot do this, you have jumped the queue, that is not fair, wait your turn, you are despicable, hope you have a terrible day” etc… I think ironic the guy is getting told off, go you lady…
One minute later… A cab is across the “drive” (road?) where we are waiting for cabs. We are near the front (might be 10 -15 people in front)… Literally, the lady who had just told the guy off for getting in a cab (in a really loud, relatively aggressive manner) runs across the road and jumps into the bad and speeds off into the “lovely Wellington weather”… Ummm, this same lady who had just chewed the air off of the guy who had earlier said “what has happened to humanity!”…
Go figure. Was a great thing to witness to tell the truth. A story I will tell my grandkids. A bit like the discussions about what would you do if a shark approached and you were with a friend, would you swim in front of your friend to protect them from a shark? True story witnessed in WLG by my very own eyes. Just in case you were wondering, yes I did make it to my session with client I was facilitating (about 3 minutes to spare) – session went fine (phew!).
