Hello world… All I can say is that I am relieved… I am non political in my comments (why, because I do not want to offend any potential customers ha!)… but…
Yahooo. We “won” or should I say “re-won” the Hobbit. Forget about the $ and the economy (there is some money coming and and some money going out as subsidies or whatever), we just had to keep it for the pride of our country. It would have been close to the All Blacks losing the Rugby World Cup next year (you heard it here, we will win it, I promise!). Remember the pride of “us” making the Lord of the Rings trilogy… The hype… There is no better advertisement for NZ and tourism. Might not be true (lies, damn lies and statistics!) but 10% of tourists who visit God’s own country, Aotearoa do so because they were inspired by LOR. I actually think the # would be higher… Yes the Hobbit, or so I am told (I have not read them, too long for me and too small writing for my aging eyes!) is mainly set in a cave (do not quote me!) but I am sure that a kiwi cave will be the best looking and inspiring cave in the whole world… So 30% of future tourists will be coming just to view the best caves in the world. A whole subsistence economy will rise up based on darkness and dampness… Waitomo Caves will try and have a Hobbit exhibition and will probably name it’s glow-worms Gandalph, Bilbo and whatever the rest of the characters are called in The Hobbit. They will probably call one “Peter Jackson” also?
Anyhow I am just relieved… I am glad about the economic impact also… We did not need to lose it as it would have made us the “not so hot place to make movies”. Let’s hold off the developing countries that are trying to take our market space or the near bankrupt developed countries that are trying to steal our thunder… And apparently NZ borrows $246 million everyday, ummm not sure how we are to supposed to ever pay that back, let alone the interest and lets hope that I misread that stat as it is scary…
Well done to the government for keeping this great project in our country… Commiserations to the “other countries” that were chasing “the business”. Next time, on a fair level playing field… may the best man win! and yes, go Kiwis! and go the All Blacks in Oct 2011!!
Looking forward to seeing The Hobbit when it comes out! If we had of lost it, it would have been an incredible example of very poor business planning!
